That Goan Girl

Road Trip from Guwahati to Shillong

Beside the mighty Brahmaputra river lies the biggest city in Assam – Guwahati. It is often regarded as the gateway to all of North-East India. The plains of Guwahati are not without their own charms – like the magnificent Kamakhya Temple, sunset by the Brahmaputra, and other city attractions like its many cafes and food outlets. What makes it even more exciting is a serene road trip from Guwahati to.. well, anywhere in the North East of India – Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, and also Meghalaya – the capital of which, is Shillong.

Also known as the ‘Scotland of the East, Shillong’s sheer beauty, authentic food, and warmth make it a well-loved destination. This teeming city boasts of lush hills, stunning waterfalls, languid lakes, and a melting pot of cultures within it. Not just that, the rolling hills, breathtaking landscapes, and some of the best sceneries of Meghalaya only add to making your drive from Guwahati a memorable experience.

Road trip from Guwahati to Shillong

I’ve explored India quite extensively by road, and this July, I took my maiden trip to the North East from Goa. Having done dozens of road trips in the past, I have the car-booking process down to the T, but this time, I had a curveball thrown my way. I had initially booked a Zoomcar in Guwahati weeks before my trip (the earlier you book, the better the rates are, and the more car options you have) but 24 hours before I was to fly, they emailed me with a cancellation, giving no concrete reason why.

I’ve had bad experiences with Zoomcar in the past, too, and as annoyed as I was, I had to begin the hunt for a rental car in the middle of a workday, with only a day to spare for my trip. On a side note, Zoomcar has been permanently kicked out of any future travel plans I make.

So there I was, mentally preparing myself to have to spend up to 10,000 INR more for a last-minute car rental booking, when I came across a brand called FuFu Gadi. To my surprise, I found options for brand-new cars (barely 6 months old) at a significantly lower cost than the Zoomcar I booked weeks ago, even though I was booking at the eleventh hour.

The next day, I boarded my first flight of the day from Goa to Delhi – a journey of 2.5 hours.  A 2-hour stopover in Delhi ensued, followed by another 3-hour flight to Guwahati. To put that into perspective, I left home in Goa at 11 AM and walked out of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport, Guwahati at 8 PM on the dot.

Our rental car from FuFu Gaadi was outside the airport, and we were in it and on our way, less than 10 minutes later. The car was in immaculate condition, clean as a whistle, and the handover procedure was extremely swift. I’ve booked several cars with Zoomcar and MyChoize over the years, and not once was the process as seamless as it was with FuFu Gaadi. I’d highly recommend the brand if you’re traveling in the North East!

How to get from Guwahati to Shillong?

After having spent the entire day in a plane, we did not want to drive another 20km to Guwahati city center for dinner and to find a place to crash for the night. So we drove around the vicinity of the airport looking for a place to stop for a quick meal and a comfortable hotel. We stopped at Grill Republica (Azara) to eat, and after finding 2-3 hotels at full occupancy, we settled for a decent hotel called Hotel Pamil Residency for Rs. 1600 a night. A clean bed and a good washroom were the only necessities for the night, which Hotel Pamil Residency had.

hotels near guwahati airport

At 9 AM the next morning, after catching up with work, we set out to Shillong.  At a distance of 120 km from Guwahati, the drive to Shillong takes 2-3 hours on average – child’s play! Wide roads in great condition will see you through most of the journey, until you begin the uphill, winding climb to Shillong. With narrow and steep highways carved through the hills, this meandering road is an adventure in itself! The National Highway 6 connects Guwahati to Shillong and the road comes with a scenic view of the sky-kissing pines and hills of northern Meghalaya.

There’s no real need for taking a break on this 3-hour drive, but it’s always a good idea. We stopped at a place called Highway Dhaba Two, which had extremely clean washrooms, average food, and bad tea. You can grab a hot meal and buy packaged snacks to tide you through the rest of the journey.

What places can you visit on your drive from Guwahati to Shillong?

Your drive from Guwahati to Shillong covers many aesthetic and renowned spots where you can stop for a quick photoshoot or a meal. Here are three places you can consider visiting on your Guwahati-Shillong road trip:

The Breathtaking Barapani

Also known as Barapani, the famous Umiam Lake of Shillong will charm you. It spreads over 200 sq km and boasts an unforgettable rich blue hue. Wrapped by green all along its banks, the magnificent lake in all its grandeur really brings out Meghalaya’s natural beauty. If you do not have the time to enter the lake premises, make a quick stop on the highway on your way to Shillong. Y

ou can bask in the majestic view that this spot provides and pair it with a cup of hot tea. Its popularity makes it home to plenty of make-shift stalls selling fresh fruits, vegetables, and local pickles. A stop at this lake really sets the mood for the rest of your adventure from Guwahati to Shillong.

Boating at Umiam Lake

Umiam Lake is an artificial waterbody on the way to Shillong. If you can spare the time to do it, consider a pit stop at this picturesque spot. Its gorgeous landscape dotted with tree-covered hills that merge with the clear Meghalaya sky will have you mesmerized. Consider taking a small snack break here or indulge in boating if you have more time on your hands. There are boating and speed-boating provisions available at the lake, along with a small restaurant if you wish to grab a bite.

Pickle-Pineapple-Squash shopping at Nongpoh

Nongpoh is a dreamy little village on your way from Guwahati to Shillong. Apart from its quaint beauty, it is also well-known for its impressive collection of locally made pickles, and home-grown pineapples and squashes.

A lot of local commuters, including myself, can vouch for the sweetness of Meghalaya’s pineapples and squashes, especially the ones found in Nongpoh, for they are one of the finest in the region. Apart from that, if you are a fan of pickles – do consider buying a jar. In Nongpoh, you will find a variety of pickles made from vegetables, chilies, pork, and beef at stalls on either side of the highway. These flavourful preparations will have you coming back for more.

Your drive serves as an exciting trailer for the adventures that will follow. You get a peek into the natural beauty of Meghalaya, the traffic-choked streets of Shillong, the succulent food that awaits you, and the vibrant cultural diversity of North East India. Once you are in Shillong, that’s where your adventure begins. Depending on your preferences, you can just explore the city or visit other destinations nearby.

Within Shillong, you can shop at the Police Bazaar, spend a day at the stunning Ward’s Lake, pack a lunch and a book to spend a day at the Lady Hydari Park, or indulge in a sumptuous meal at the City Hut Dhaba. If you want to explore more of Meghalaya, Shillong makes places like Cherrapunjee, Dawki, and Laitlum really accessible. So no matter what you like doing on your adventures in the northeast, it all starts with a memorable road trip from Guwahati to Shillong.

How to get from Guwahati to Shillong and Cherrapunjee

A quick guide on how to get from Guwahati to Shillong and Cherrapunjee. This guide focusses on getting from Guwahati to Shillong and Cherrapunjee by public transport or by car. If you are driving your own car, scroll down for a route map.

Here’s a quick guide on how to get from Guwahati to Shillong and Cherrapunjee.

How to get from Guwahati to Shillong by public transport

Although the Meghalaya Tourism website state that regular buses to Shillong leave from the Inter State Bus Terminal, there were no buses from Guwahati to Shillong when we arrived there. Apparently, there are two private buses, one at 6:00 and one at 17:00, but these times are terrible. If you want to travel from Guwahati to Shillong outside of those times, you have to travel by Sumo.

A shared Sumo at a snack stop on its way to Shillong

Our shared Sumo at a snack stop

Sumos are basically shared Jeep taxis. They’re the most common form of travel between cities and villages in the northeast. Sumos from Guwahati to Shillong leave from Khanapara bus stand. To get there, jump on a bus leaving from G.S. Road near the train station. Most buses going from here, driving away from the train station, will pass here. Just ask the hawker. A ticket to Khanapara is 10 Rs. per person .

Looking for accommodation in Guwahati? Check out the best deals on Booking !

At Khanapara, you’ll be accosted by plenty of Sumo hawkers. It’s good to walk around a bit, since Sumo’s don’t leave until full. So if you enter an empty Sumo, you might have to wait for a while. Some drivers will try to get you to charter the whole Sumo. Friendly but firmly decline their offer (unless you want to, of course).

Getting from Guwahati to Shillong by shared Sumo costs 170 Rs. per person . In our experience, drivers are honest about the fare, but this being India, be wary of shysters. 170 Rs. is the standard price. It takes 2-3 hours to get from Guwahati to Shillong.

Note:  There might be Sumos leaving from Guwahati’s train station to Shillong. From here the price is 10-20 Rs. per person more. If bus services resume, a bus to Shillong from Guwahati should cost 100 – 130 Rs. per person.

The Shillong to Cherrapunjee Sumo stand is located on the second floor of a dark parking garage. It’s marked on Google Maps. There will be a written sign saying Sohra (another name for Cherrapunjee) above two parking lots.

A ride from Shillong to Cherrapunjee costs 70 Rs. per person . The first driver wanted to charge us more to put our luggage on the roof of the car—which is BS—so we waited about half an hour for another Sumo to go. Sumos from Shillong to Cherranpunjee go when full. It takes 1.5-2 hours to get from Shillong to Cherrapunjee.

We highly recommend it.

There are several cheap sleeping options in lower Cherrapunjee/Sohra, about 20 minutes walking downhill from the main town.

By The Way Hostel charges 250 Rs. per person , and D-Cloud charges 300-350 Rs. per person . Accommodation is simple, and a little overpriced if you’re not alone, but you don’t have many other options. There are a handful of nondescript restaurants on the “main” street near By The Way.

Useful piece of information about Assam. Very well described and the pictures are extremely beautiful. Thank you for sharing this kind of valuable and some unique information. If you have any requirements for a cab then you can book a cab from Bharat Taxi.

Hi, please advise how can i reach meghalaya from Gowhati railway station in cheapest way.

Do you suggest to rent a 2 wheeler? (I am used to travel 200-300km in a day) and if yes, from where should I rent it? (from Guwahati to from Shillong)

I’m not sure where you can rent bikes, but a motorbike would certainly be perfect for exploring the area! Just make sure to be careful, the roads can get muddy and slippery in the rain.

great guidence, awesom, thnx

Hi Alex, thank you so much for a detailed explanation for travel. However, the train I’ve booked the destination is Kamakhya junction. Would you know any route to reach the destined Khanapara?

Do these sumo car drivers issue any receipt for the taxi journeys undertaken, for the purpose of my LTC bill submission?

Umiam Lake: Umiam Lake, a mesmerizing man-made reservoir, also known as the Barapani Lake. The scenic Umiam Lake is encircled by lush green East Khasi hills that form one of the best panoramic sights for nature-lovers in the country. The lake is popular for boating, Angling, Kayaking and Water Skiing. The sunrise at the lake is a treat to watch. The Umiam Lake has a park adjoining it which is a hotspot for picnics.  Shillong Peak: At the height of 6449 ft or 1965 m above sea level, Shillong Peak is the highest point of Shillong. It offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city, the Himalayas, its waterfalls as well as of the Bangladesh plains. A telescope is available for tourists to get a bird's eye view.  Ward’s Lake: Also known as Pollock's Lake, the mesmerising lake is a popular picnic spot. In the middle of the lake is a small bridge created to enable the visitors to have a panoramic view of the entire lake or feed the tiny fishes floating around in the water (puffed rice is available at the entrance of the lake for feeding the fishes). The major highlight of the lake is definitely paddle boating. Lady Hydari Park: Named after the first lady of the state and wife of the Governor of Assam, Lady Hydari Park is a japanese styled garden. There is also a small lake with ducks and colourful fishes.  It is an ideal place to visit with children because there is a nice playing area for them. The museum and the mini zoo inside the park premises makes for a good learning experience. Spread Eagle Falls: The Spread Eagle Falls are considered to be the widest waterfall in Shillong. The scintillating waterfall is also known as Sati Falls or Urkaliar because of the belief that Ka Liar slipped into it. The majestic waterfall gushes down steep hills, towering three sides into a massive pool of water which is ideal for the tourists to sit and lounge by. The Spread Eagle Falls, which looks like an eagle with its wings spread wide (hence the name), is a popular picnic spot. Police Bazaar: Police Bazar is the major market of Shillong. In addition to an array of restaurants, hotels and big brand stores, the Police Bazaar also has a flea market popular for its traditional handicrafts stores, exquisite Meghalaya merchandise, regional apparels, junk jewellery and the like. Elephant Falls: Named after an Elephant like stone at its foot, the Elephant Falls are amongst the most popular falls in the North-East, situated next to Shillong. It is a tourists' paradise with three layers of the falls accessible from different vantage points. The first of the three waterfalls is tucked between the dense trees and is very broad. The second waterfall reduces to thin strands of water and is almost negligible in winters due to the receding water levels. The third and the most visible waterfall is the tallest with clear water flowing like a sheet of milk on the dark rocks in the backdrop. Out of the three, the third waterfall tends to strike the visitors as the most impressive.  Mawlynnong: Mawlynnong is a small village situated around 90 km from Shillong in the East Khasi Hills. It is widely popular as the cleanest village in Asia. Mawlynnong offers some of the most picturesque natural beauty with lush green valleys, crystal clear water in the river, an abundance of flowering orchids hanging from the trees and extremely clean roads. Apart from its cleanliness, Mawlynnong is also famous for its living root bridge which is one of the most popular attractions in Meghalaya. Mawsynram: Acknowledged as the wettest place in the world, the mesmerizing village of Mawsynram, located 61 kms south of Shillong is a nature lover's delight and the perfect destination for a weekend trip. Many Shillong tour packages include a day trip or 1 night stay in Mawsynram. The village is well known for its huge formation of a stalagmite, which takes after the shape of a 'Shivalinga'. Cherrapunji: Earlier the wettest place on the Earth, Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, also known as Sohra, is known for its double-decker living root bridge. Located around 50 Kms from Shillong, it is included in many Shillong tour packages. Other natural attractions here include cave formations such as the Mawsmai Caves and Krem Phyllut. The misty valleys and the waterfalls in the region make a long drive through Cherrapunji ideal for those who love road trips.  Kaziranga National Park: Home to the largest population of the one-horned rhino on earth, Kaziranga National Park is one of India’s national treasures. Since it is located around 185km from Shillong, some Shillong holiday packages include a trip to this amazing wonder.  Here, a wide variety of fauna thrives including the one-horned rhino, Asiatic elephants, wild water buffalo, leopards and Royal Bengal Tigers. Kaziranga National Park is also listed officially as a Tiger reserve and is home to one of the world’s largest population of tigers.

Things to Do in Shillong

Boating & Water Sports at Umiam Lake: A leisure boat ride should never be missed at Umiam Lake. Boating is one of the most preferred activities in the region and visitors can choose between Group, Family, Couple and Solo boat rides between 9:00 AM and 05:00 PM at costs starting from INR 20. Adventure seekers can satisfy their craving for adventure sports at the Water Sports Complex by the Umiam Lake that has provisions for Solo boating, Angling, Kayaking and Water Skiing. Trek to Laitlum Canyons: Perched on the East Khasi Hills, Laitlum Canyons is a less explored but one of the most picturesque tourist and trekking destinations in Shillong. This exotic viewing site offers the best panoramic views of Meghalaya embraced by the majestic hills and valleys. To reach the viewing spot, a short 2-kilometre trek has to be undertaken. One can also choose the longer path to reach the top. There is also a challenging, yet interesting trekking opportunity for the adventure lovers and trekkers down to the Smit village, which is about 6 kms away from the Canyons. There are other small trails and paths that lead to tiny slate-roofed homes, perched at great heights.  David Scott Trail: Named after David Scott, a British officer, the David Scott Trail is an old and one of the most popular trekking routes in Meghalaya. It is a 16 kilometres long trek which stretches from Mawphlang to Lad Mawphlang. The trek can be done from either side, but it is commonly attempted from the Mawphlang side since it makes it a less ascending trail. The trail is not well marked and one can take the help of locals for directions. Mountain Climbing at Diengei Peak: Situated on the western side of Shillong, is 6200 ft in altitude, this peak is just 200 ft shorter than the tallest peak in Shillong, Shillong Peak. For a height of about 1000 ft, the gradient of this peak is very steep and precipitous which makes for excellent mountain climbing. Other adventurous sports like rock climbing and rappelling can be done here. If you are an adventurist, visiting here should be on top of your list of things to do in Shillong. Angling at Dawki: A small border town in the Jaintia Hills, Dawki and its famed river Umngot is a must visit if in Meghalaya. Sandwiched between India and Bangladesh, Dawki is a major center of trade between India and Bangladesh. The city becomes a hotbed of tourist activities especially during the spring months as it hosts the boat riding competition on the Umngot River. The surrounding greenery, the cold water of the river and the beautiful suspension bridge on the River Umngot make Dawki a place worth a visit. Angling is another popular activity to try at Dawki.

Why to Buy Shillong Tour Package?

Local Expertise: Tour operators specializing in Shillong possess an in-depth understanding of the region. They are familiar with the local culture, climate, terrain, and challenges. This expertise allows them to plan itineraries that consider factors like unpredictable weather, hilly terrain, and road conditions. They know the best routes, timings, and hidden gems that may be challenging for independent travelers to discover. Altitude Acclimatization: Shillong's higher altitude can lead to altitude sickness for some travelers. Tour packages are designed to help you acclimatize gradually. They plan your itinerary in a way that you ascend gradually, allowing your body to adjust to the change in altitude safely. This reduces the risk of altitude-related health issues and ensures a more comfortable journey. Transportation: Shillong's public transportation options are limited, and the region's roads can be rough. Tour packages often include private vehicles and experienced drivers who are well-versed in navigating the challenging terrain. Having reliable transportation ensures a comfortable and safe journey, especially on winding mountain roads. Customized Itinerary: Tour operators can customize your itinerary based on your preferences and interests. They consider the challenges and opportunities Shillong presents, allowing you to explore the region while staying safe and comfortable. Whether you're interested in cultural experiences, adventure activities, or scenic beauty, they can tailor your trip to match your desires. Accommodation: Finding suitable accommodation in Shillong, particularly in remote areas, can be challenging. Tour packages typically include pre-booked accommodations, ensuring you have a comfortable place to stay throughout your journey. This eliminates the stress of searching for lodging, especially during peak tourist seasons. Local Guides: Many tour packages provide local guides who are not only knowledgeable about Shillong's history, culture, and traditions but also speak the local language. Having a guide enhances your overall experience, allowing you to connect with the local community and gain insights into the region's unique heritage.
