Queen's 2012 visit to Worcester remembered by luncheon master of ceremonies

A FORMER Worcester councillor has shared his memories of the day he welcomed the Queen to Worcester as part of her Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Alan Feeney was chosen to be master of ceremonies in July 2012 at a luncheon in the Assembly Room at Worcester Guildhall in July 2012.

On the day the late Queen was accompanied by her husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

He said: “I was struck by the gravitas that accompanied the late Queen and the effortless way in which she could command a room, without ever needing to be the centre of attention.

“I had to extend my duties slightly to pouting wine however, as the waiting staff were a little intimidated.

“The Queen declined however, as she had her Dubonnet and that was plenty.”

He commented that the mere suggestion the Queen was entering was all it took to bring silence to the room.

He added: “It was an amazing day, with crowds packing streets all over the city.

“Everyone wanted to learn about our regalia, the city sword, maces and history.

“It was a memory that will last forever, and I will share it at every opportunity. May her late Majesty rest in peace.”

A lookback at when Queen Elizabeth II visited Worcester

WHEN Queen Camilla visited Worcester for Maundy Thursday it brought back dazzling memories of previous royal visits.

And specifically from Queen Elizabeth II who was always warmly welcomed by the people of the city and died in September 2022 aged 96.

It all started before she even became Queen.

Her first official visit to Worcester to tour the Royal Worcester factory and open the porcelain museum was in 1951 minus Philip and when still Princess Elizabeth.

She became Queen in February 1952 after the death of her father George VI.

And it was not until 1957 the city had its first close look at the new royal couple.

April 24 was a memorable day for more than 7,000 schoolchildren who packed Worcestershire County Cricket Club's New Road ground.

The Queen and Prince Philip were slowly driven around the outfield, standing in the back of a maroon Land Rover.

That was on the second day of a two-day official visit to the county with the overnight stop spent on the Royal train near Leigh Court.

It had arrived at Shrub Hill station the previous evening when the Royal couple were driven down Lowesmoor, St Nicholas Street, The Cross and High Street to the floodlit Guildhall for dinner with 500 guests.

The following morning they arrived at 10am at Henwick Station and drove down to the cricket ground.

While the Band of the Royal Artillery played, the Queen inspected a guard of honour before changing back to their official car for the drive to Malvern where they visited the Royal Radar Establishment and Malvern College before going into Herefordshire at British Camp.

There followed royal visits by both the Queen and Prince Philip in 1980 for the Maundy Thursday Service at Worcester Cathedral and in 1989 for the 800th anniversary of the first Royal Charter to Worcester.

The Queen and Prince Philip made a near four-hour visit to the city to pay tribute to the Queen’s Own Mercian Yeomanry and unveil a plaque to open new £350,000 workshops at the cathedral.

There followed a tour of the building before an invited audience of 1,500 and lunch was taken in the Guildhall with 200 special guests.

The Queen visited again in 2001 as part of the 250-year celebrations of Worcester Porcelain and to open the new Worcester City Police Station.

The Queen's final visit to Worcester was in 2012 as part of her Diamond Jubilee tour.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Worcester to officially open library and history centre The Hive.

In 1989 Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II visited Worcester. Welcoming crowds lined the street as she arrived on the royal train.

The photos may be over 60 years apart but they show how Worcestershire and the Black Country has had a firm place in the Queen's life over her reigning decades.

Pictured as an elegant sprightly princess in 1951, she meets girl guides in Worcester , while 61 years later in 2012, she is back for her Diamond Jubilee tour with Prince Philip.

These are just some of the treasured photos Spanning Worcestershire and the Black Country as we take a nostalgic look back at Royal visits to towns from Redditch to Hagley , Dudley and Stourbridge.

That's not just by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, but her children, sister Princess Margaret and Princess Diana.

Photos in this album below cover everything from openings of new Redditch housing estates to the Three Counties Show at Malvern and to offer a shoulder of support to victims of floodings along the River Severn at Upton.

In pictures: the Queen and Royal visits to Worcestershire

The county's royal support goes back centuries, to the Civil War and beyond, but in our photos, it even stretches back to Queen Victoria's reign.

In the picture album above, you can see when Bromsgrove town centre was marking that monarch's Diamond Jubilee, in around June 1897.

Locals in Bromsgrove were back out showing their support, in the photo below, decking out the High Street in street decorations for the celebration of the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, the current Queen's parents in June 1937.

Among the key visits are the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh's tour of north Worcestershire and the Black Country on St George’s Day in 1957. The Royal Train steamed into Hagley Station to take the young couple on to see crowds far and wide.

During the day, they did a whistle-stop tour of Halesowen, Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Dudley, Brierley Hill, Stourbridge , Kidderminster and Worcester.

Crowds below show just how eager residents were to see the young monarch and her husband, five years into her reign when she was a mother-of-two to Prince Charles and Princess Anne.

Crowds in Priory Street, Dudley, waiting for the Queen in 1957 during her tour of North Worcestershire and the Black Country.

On the day of her visit to the Black Country she travelled from Windsor by the Royal Train, always pulled by two impeccably maintained engines.

Arranging the Royal Train was no simple matter and several locomotives were involved with movements planned over days before and after the official visit. You can see more photos from this tour in the photo album above.
