SDCC18: Diamond Select Unveils Enterprise C Ship, Kelvin Kirk And Spock ‘Star Trek’ Figures

diamond select star trek models

| July 19, 2018 | By: Anthony Pascale 29 comments so far

We were hoping that Diamond Select Toys would have some news at San Diego Comic-Con and they delivered, showing off both previously and newly announced Star Trek items on preview night. We have a full breakdown of what was going on at their booth and what they had to say about their future with Star Trek.

Newly announced: USS Enterprise-C ship

A surprise for Comic-Con was the revelation of a USS Enterprise-C ship, from  Star Trek: The Next Generation’s “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” Diamond had cryptically mentioned a new Star Trek ship was in development, but this was the first time it was revealed.

The Enterprise-C is targeted for release in 2019. It will come with electronics for lights and sounds, and will retail for $69.99.

Newly announced: Kelvin Kirk and Spock

Diamond Select also revealed that for the first time they will be making toys for the Kelvin timeline Star Trek movies. Their first two offerings will be 7-inch Captain Kirk and Commander Spock figures.

The design of the figures is based on the costumes from the uniforms used in Star Trek and  Star Trek Into Darkness . Each figure comes with a number of accessories including phaser and phaser rifle, with different colored firing attachments. They are priced at $24.99 each and are expected to be released by the end of 2018.

First time reveal: Borg figure

Diamond Select had previously announced they were working on a Borg figure, but revealed it for the first time at San Diego Comic-Con 2018.

The 7-inch figure comes with interchangeable arms, head, and eyepiece. The Borg figure is expected to be available in early 2019 and is priced at $24.99.

TNG phaser and USS Reliant are still coming

One thing not on display was the previously announced  Star Trek: The Next Generation  phaser, which was first revealed at Toy Fair a few years ago. A rep for DST said it is still in the works with new features being added. They are hoping it will be released in 2019.

We were also hoping to see the reveal of the previously announced USS Reliant ship toy. A spokesperson for Diamond Select said the Reliant ship toy is still being finalized at the factory and it is now expected to be released after the USS Enterprise-C.

TrekMovie at SDCC

SDCC is just getting started. We have more news from preview night coming, plus coverage of all the exciting Star Trek-related events and panels.

What about the RELIANT???

My question exactly!!!

I read somewhere that the Reliant was supposed to have the nacelles above the saucer section, but when whoever approves starship designs OK’d the sketch of the Reliant, he was looking at it upside-down. Is that true?

Enterprise-C looks great; but you’ll forgive me if I have a hard time believing we’ll see it any time this decade.

Also amazed that they still haven’t shown a prototype of the Reliant,

Reliant prototype was shown on The Toys That Made Us. (the netflix series)

That Enterprise-C…it’s just so beautiful.

@Benjamin — I’ve always thought the Ent. C was one of the best looking Enterprise models, maybe even better than the original. The struts need some work, but otherwise, I think they got a lot about it right. It I never understood what the TNG designers were doing with all the blue rings and segments. I don’t know the history, but could the Ent C have been a prototype for the D? It looks too well thought out and developed to have been quickly whipped up for a one-off episode of TNG.

The Ent C was designed as a halfway point between the Excelsior and Galaxy class, so it kinda designed itself in terms of the details. For yesterday’s enterprise they had tried to make a model of the more elaborately curved design seen on the wall on the Ent D, but because of budget and time constraints they had to simplify it to the boxy version that made it to the screen.

@albatrosity — I know why it would be designed that way, but I don’t agree it looks as if it designed itself. The neck and secondary hull looks much more like the ENT A than the Excelsior, so it wasn’t simply a natural progression. Some thought and effort went into making it look the way it does, which in my mind is a lot more like a preliminary design for the D, as evolved from the A, given the attention to detail in the limited amount of time they would have had to design and build it. Are you saying your explanation is the actual account as documented somewhere? If so, it’s even more remarkable in my mind.

Yes that’s the reason! From Memory Alpha: “The studio model was designed by Rick Sternbach, based on sketches as well as on a design concept painting produced by Andrew Probert for the first season of Star Trek: The Next Generation. The design was intended to suggest an intermediate step between the Excelsior-class and the Galaxy-class starships. A relief sculpture of Probert’s design was placed in the observation lounge aboard the USS Enterprise-D. Unfortunately, the model was needed for “Yesterday’s Enterprise” much sooner than the time it would take to fabricate the smoother lines of Probert’s concept, requiring Sternbach’s alterations which ended up on Greg Jein’s final model.”

Curious Cadet,

Your prototype suspicion could have merit. I was having a laugh going through goofy patent claims Paramount had made in actually getting patents for its various Trek ship designs and decided to dig on some claims they made for their Reliant that just seem as if they were too off to be the obvious puffery.

I had thought Reliant was a design they threw together to meet the onscreen demands of making the two Federation ships clearly distinguishable in TWOK. But I actually found evidence indicating an unmistakably Reliantish design came from one of the earlier prior productions (possibly even TMP itself). There were even indications that some responsible prior FX concern (ILM?) was worried about how to properly light it and had substantially built it to take test snaps to work it out.

Check out Junkball Media on YouTube. He does retrospectives on most Trek ships and gets into the details of how the design came about. They’re typically very good. You might find some answers there (I don’t remember Enterprise C details).

It feels like a natural progression of what had come before.

You can’t see this kind of detail in the original SD episode, and I’m kinda digging the alternating concentric segments in pastel hues — blue, darker blue, cream, pale-yellow lifeboat hatches. I get a Chris Foss vibe from it — the pattern, not the subtle colors; his art is more wasp warning-stripe (not to say garish) in nature.

Over three years to get a toy phaser right? Seriously? (Sigh)

It is kind iI feel annoying, especially when we get teased so long by viewing the prototypes. I understand wanting to get things right, but it’s absurd how long they take between the announcement of the items and their release. The STIII phaser took FOREVER, and we still didn’t get (and it’s confirmed there are no plans to release) the alternate STIV version with the different Phaser 1 configuration.

And now supposedly they’ve taken so long to do these releases that they’re not getting good revenue from it for them or CBS/Paramount, and the licensure may go to McFarlane Toys in its entirety, then good luck getting anything with marginally good build quality.

So take these time release estimates and multiply them by a factor of four.

Wann nur wann machen die mal schöne Raumpatrouille Orion Fanartikel? :( Hallo Diamond, ich würds kaufen, wenn Ihr es produziert.

I’m past the point in my life where I’d collect this stuff (trying to minimize as I get older), but that Ent-C looks sweet.

Maybe if I win the lottery I’ll fill a room with starships hanging from the ceiling…:)

Now all we have to do is sit back and wait for the ‘Battle Damage’ variant of the big C to be announced. Hopefully that one won’t be a SDCC exclusive.

That model of the C looks worse than an Eaglemoss.

The Spock figure looks good, the Kirk one does not. That Ent-C looks pretty good for a toy.

Excellent! The C will finally complete my collection. Long overdue.

Can’t wait to add the Enterprise C to my collection! Oh wait, I said that about the Reliant and TNG Phaser too, and I stopped holding my breath on those over a year ago.

I think the design resembles Enterprise D.

Until the advent of the J.J.-prize this was my candidate for the ugliest ship ever to bear the name “Enterprise.” A shame, too, because Andy Probert’s renderings of the E-C were much more graceful than what appeared on screen (actually better-proportioned than the Galaxy Class IMO), but as noted below TNG didn’t have the budget to do the original design justice. Tobias Richter wound up doing a very nice CGI version a few years back, which can be easily Googled by anyone curious to see what Probert’s original was intended to look like.

you sure your wearing glasses? Yeah that’s why PROBERTS design never got passed the drawing board. Accept the design as it is or put tape over the mouth.

So years back, I(and many others) asked Diamond Select about the possibility of them doing the Kelvin Timeline Enterprise for the Starship Legends line. We were told that they didn’t have the license for the Kelvin Timeline at all. Fast forward to today and we see that they now HAVE said license…and apparently have one more ship in the pipeline that isn’t the Enterprise-C or the Reliant. Is it too much to hope for? To finally have a decent model of the ST2009/Into Darkness Enterprise that I don’t have to build myself?

DST honestly will make the NEW kelvin Enterprise-A before the 2009/Into Darkness Enterprise.

Does Diamond Select Still Make Star Trek Toys?

Does Diamond Select Still Make Star Trek Toys?

Share the Universe!

If you’re a diehard fan of Diamond Select Toys, Star Trek , and, of course, Star Trek toys made by Diamond Select, you’ve probably been wondering what happened to Diamond Select’s Star Trek toy lineup in recent years.

Needless to say, the toy giant has fallen off the radar where Star Trek is concerned.

And if you’ve been on the hunt for Star Trek toys by Diamond Select, you’ll have found out how difficult it is now to find new releases – even old releases selling at reasonable prices.

So, what the Spock has happened?

Star Trek TOS USS Enterprise NCC-1701 HD Ship

  • Diamond Select Toys
  • Measures 16-Inch long
  • Features light and sound effects
  • Based on Matt Jeffries's original design

Unfortunately, the answer comes down to licensing – at least for the main part.

And to fully understand whether Diamond Select is still making Star Trek toys—now and in the future—it’s important to go through a little bit of history.

Star Trek Diamond Select Toys

Serious collectors will already own some of the famous Star Trek toys released by Diamond Select throughout the 2000s.

These included well-made action figures of iconic characters Picard, Data, Captain Kirk, Spock, Scotty, and more, along with highly sought-after models of I.S.S. Enterprise the U.S.S. Enterprise.

Minimates, which Diamond Select Toys took on from Art Asylum in 2007, was another popular Diamond Select toy lineup of 2-inch action figures that, to this day, remain valuable Star Trek collector’s items.

Diamond Select was founded in 1999 and over the years acquired licensing rights to produce toys, figures, and more.

They also make them for famous franchises such as The Walking Dead , Invincible , Marvel, Halo , Tomb Raider , The Real Ghostbusters , Back to the Future , Indiana Jones , Transformers , and Battlestar Galactica , in addition to Star Trek.

Star Trek Playmates Toys

Playmates is another big player in the toy industry.

They made toys and action figures for Star Wars , Marvel Comics, Marvel Studios, Gotham , Street Fighter X Tekken , Tomb Raider , The Walking Dead , G hostbusters , DC Comics, and The Muppets – to name a few.

Star Trek was no doubt one of its most popular toy lines, as Playmates owned the licensing rights for seven long years from 1992 to 1999, during which it released toy replicas of almost every Star Trek character that can be named.

In addition, Playmates Toys also released collectible toys based on the 2009 motion picture Star Trek , which saw the main Star Trek characters hit the big screen for the first time supported by a star-studded cast.

Star Trek McFarlane Toys

Like Diamond Select and Playmates, McFarlane Toys has also dabbled in Star Trek action figures and memorabilia, alongside releases for The Simpsons , Halo , Assassin’s Creed , Avatar: The Last Airbender , Warhammer , and more.

Mcfarlane's Captain Jean-Luc-Picard

Unfortunately, the Star Trek lineup was relatively short-lived .

McFarlane Toys acquired the rights to make Star Trek toys in 2017, which was quickly followed by a double-whammy release of super-detailed Captain Kirk and Picard toy figures, both complete with customizable accessories.

Despite kicking off to a good start, fans of both Star Trek and McFarlane Toys were left disappointed in 2018.

This is because a highly anticipated model replica of the Discovery Phaser had to be canceled (during the preorder stage, of all possible times) due to US toy weapon regulations.

Ever since—and much like Diamond Select of recent years—McFarlane Toys has gone quiet about the possibility of new Star Trek releases .

Does Diamond Select Still Have A Star Trek License?

You might be glad to know that Diamond Select Toys still retains its Star Trek license. Despite that, Diamond Select has not released new Star Trek toys, action figures, or starship replicas for a good while now.

Among Diamond Select’s other ongoing licenses, the company has the rights to Ghostbusters , Gotham , Knight Rider , Bruce Lee, Lost in Space , Marvel Comics, Marvel Studios, The Munsters , The Muppets , Star Wars , Tomb Raider , and lots more.

So, if you’re a fan of Diamond Select and a firm culture vulture of the above franchises, these are still available at most major retailers. As for new Star Trek toys… Well, that leads us to the next section.

Playmates and the Licensing Rights to Star Trek

In a move that thrilled Playmates collectors worldwide, Playmates Toys acquired—or regained, for a better word—the full licensing rights to the Star Trek franchise, which was announced to the public in 2021.

The rights include Star Trek action figures, vehicles and ships, role-play items, and more, all to be launched in 2022, based on Star Trek: Prodigy , plus future Star Trek releases that are currently in the works.

Needless to say, if you’re a fan of both Playmates collectibles and the entire Star Trek franchise—series, movies, and all—this is good news.

In fact, many even consider it something of a homecoming for Star Trek action figures .

So, since Playmates Toys now holds the licensing rights to the Star Trek franchise, does Diamond Select still make Star Trek toys?

Unfortunately, the question is something only the higher-ups at Diamond Select Toys can answer.

While Diamond Select still holds official rights to Star Trek Minimates, Minimate vehicles, and select action figures, the company has not released any new Star Trek toys in recent years, nor has it announced future plans to do so.

Despite that, that doesn’t necessarily mean Diamond Select Star Trek is out of the picture.

And even though they are not currently making new Star Trek toys, past releases (used and unopened) can still be bought from nostalgia toy collectors and memorabilia dealers if you have the cash to spare.

The Short Answer

Diamond Select Toys is currently not making new Star Trek toys, nor has it announced any future plans for new releases.

Diamond Toys still holds some rights to make Star Trek toys, however—including Minimates and select action figures—so don’t write them off just yet!

Still, if you’re not divided between Diamond Select and Playmates, there are upcoming Playmates releases to look forward to with the coming of further Star Trek motion pictures and television series.

They now hold the rights, in addition to the soon-to-be-released lineup of Star Trek: Prodigy toy action figures hitting stores at the end of 2022.

It’s a new Ask DST, and Diamond Select Toys and Gentle Giant Ltd. president DSTChuck is here to answer your questions! Whether they’re about GG Ltd.’s Star Wars busts and statues, or DST’s Star Trek ships, or anything else under our umbrella, he’s got an answer!

So read on and see if your question was answered – if it wasn’t, Submit a question in submit in ASK DST form , or e-mail DSTChuck!

Jeffrey M. First and foremost the new Boba Fett is great! Now can we get a Han solo in carbonite to go with him? DSTChuck: Glad you like him! We do have more Star Wars action figures planned, but I am sorry I cannot say which ones just yet. A.F. Hey i was wondering if there are any plans to make a Korra figure from The Legend of Korra series? DSTChuck: For the time being we are focused on the Avatar line, we’ll have to see where we go after that. Scott P. Last winter you displayed Robby the Robot next to The Iron Giant. Will Robby be coming to market and if so approximately when would we see him? DSTChuck: We are still working on that project, and at this time I do not have an ETA for you.

diamond select star trek models

Tyler F. Hey! Is there any specific release date for NBX Series 10? DSTChuck: I am sad to say, due to the timing of when we solicited it during the pandemic, we were not able to go forward with it for this year. We are going to re-market it to fans and retailers next year for delivery in time for Halloween. Thomas J. Hi, i was wondering, if You are planning on release of some busts of Star Wars Legends…….Like Starkiller maybe? DSTChuck: Legends characters have been discussed, so we’ll have to see what the future holds. Bill H. Any news on Star Trek TNG’s Cobra Phaser prop that was considered for production a few years ago? DSTChuck: I am sorry to say that at this time there are no further plans to release the Cobra phaser.

diamond select star trek models

Geoffery S. May I ask when you are going to offer the busts for the rest of the rebels crew as statues I have hera but would prefer it as a statue and i wont buy sabine until she is a full sculpt DSTChuck: I do not know when, if ever, we plan to release the Rebels crew as statues. Sorry. Greg I wanted to know if there would be another wave of Gotham action figures. Especially Tabitha Galavan and Jerome Valeska? Are there going to be any Swamp Thing TV series action figures? DSTChuck: I am sorry, we have no new figures planned for the TV show Gotham. Joseph L. Love the NBX line. Are you considering figures for other stop motion films like Corpse Bride, Coraline, ParaNorman, or Frankenweenie? DSTChuck: We do not have plans at this time to make figures of any of those properties. Sorry. Fabricio V. With the shutdown of DC Collectibles and since you guys already have the license for BTAS and related products. So, any chance you could pick up from where they left? Could even make the Justice League Animated figures that we have always wanted and they barely made. Other companies have the DC license. but none of them makes that particular style and scale that DC Colletibles was making. So any hopes at all? DSTChuck: I think that is something that is up to Warner Brothers and DC Comics, but for our part we love working on DC properties!

diamond select star trek models

Aaron R. Hello, I love your MCU action figures line. Will you be releasing a Black Widow figure from the upcoming film in addition to Taskmaster? Thanks. DSTChuck: I am sorry, we do not have a new MCU figure for Black Widow planned at this time. Ryan C. Is there a chance we will get Minimates based off of The Rocketeer? As a big fan of the original Rocketeer comics from the late and great Dave Stevens and the 1991 movie, I would absolutely love to own Minimates based off of this property. Since next year is the 40th anniversary of when Dave Stevens created The Rocketeer, as well as the 30th anniversary of the movie, I think that would be the ideal time to put out Rocketeer Minimates. Please consider this, the fans would buy them! Also, is there a chance we will ever see the Bruce Lee Minimates get released? Could we maybe get them as say, an Entertainment Earth exclusive or an exclusive sold at the Bruce Lee Store website? Please reconsider the Bruce Lee Minimates, as fans would love to buy them and with this year being what would’ve been his 80th birthday, more merchandise should be released of “The Great One.” DSTChuck: I am sorry, at this time we do not have plans for either Bruce Lee or Rocketeer Minimates.

diamond select star trek models

Alfredo P. Hi there! Long time DST collector of star trek ships and figures, all releases have been beautiful & I love them all. Will Diamond Select continue to produce Trek items? DSTChuck: We would love to keep going with Trek, and the Enterprise C is our priority — once we get all the issues worked out, we hope to solicit it officially for order. Still got a burning question? See a doctor, then submit it in the drop-down form up top or e-mail DSTChuck!
