For those truly epic, once-in-a-lifetime destinations, you want to leave your itinerary to the experts. Whether your dream is to see the Big Five on an African Safari, trek tall mountains, explore European cities, or something even wilder, a group tour is the easiest way to do it.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?

We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2023 for every type of traveler.

Best Overall Group Travel: Exodus Travels

Images of nature around the mountains and lakes of Slovenia as seen on the Exodus Travels' Lakes and Mountains of Slovenia walking tour

With trips on every continent, Exodus Travels covers anywhere on this planet that you could possibly want to go, from popular destinations like the Amalfi Coast to well off-the-beaten path adventures like Tajikistan. This award-winning group travel company boasts thousands of repeat customers who sign up for trips year after year (97% of past participants would recommend Exodus Travels to a friend).

These small group tours operate with only around 12-16 people, and always feature experienced local leaders who can give you a unique insight into your destination. Exodus Travels caters to any type of travel style, including trips broken down by type of activity (think walking, cycling, multi-adventure, winter, or cultural) as well as type of traveler (family, age group, etc.). There are curated collections (coastal, “away from it all”, European wilderness, and trips of a lifetime) to inspire you, as well as self-guided options for when you want all the benefits of a group tour planner without the actual group. Looking for that special safari? Exodus Travels just partners with the African Wildlife Foundation to create carefully curated luxury adventures that go above and beyond the standard safari.

Exodus Travels tours work for almost any budget, with options that range from affordable to premium.

Top Trip: Explore under-the-radar Europe by foot on Exodus Travels’ Lakes & Mountains of Slovenia walking tour .

Best Adventure Group Travel: World Expeditions

Groups of hikers walking and camping around the mountains of Kilimanjaro with World Expeditions

World Expeditions has been taking adventurous travelers to remote locations all over the world ever since its first group trek through Nepal in 1975. Today, World Expeditions offers active itineraries on every continent. Intrepid travelers can opt for trips themed around mountaineering, rafting, cycling, hiking, and more.

World Expeditions aims to leave communities and places where they operate tours better than they found them. Trips are created using the company’s Thoughtful Travel Charter as a guideline, which emphasizes respect for the environment, sustainability, having a positive impact on local communities, protecting wildlife, and more.

World Expeditions’ trips are capped at just 16 people to provide a good experience for participants, and there are no single supplements for solo travelers willing to share a room with someone of the same gender.

Top Trip: Summit Africa’s tallest mountain on a fully-supported trek up Kilimanjaro on World Expeditions’ eight day trip up the beautiful Lemosho Route .

Best Budget Group Travel: G Adventures

People visiting famous sites around China with the G Adventures' China Express group travel tour

For travelers on a budget, G Adventures offers cheap group tours that make dream destinations accessible to nearly anyone. (Think: sailing the Galapagos for just $1,124 , criss-crossing India’s Golden Triangle for $559 , or spending 8 days in Bali for less than $800.)

G Adventures is one of the best tour companies for solo travelers as well, as most trips don’t have a single-supplement. You can choose to share a room with another G Adventures solo traveler, or pay extra to have your own space.

G Adventures keeps costs down by opting for cheaper hotels and local meals, and making certain activities optional (for an additional cost). Pick your travel style—options range from “basic” to more luxe tours run in partnership with National Geographic. Family tours, local living tours (featuring homestays), and wellness-focused tours are also available.

Top Trip: G Adventures’ China Express trip is a great way to see the highlights of China if you’re short on both time and budget.

Customer Reviews

Thank you for being friendly, professional, helpful, and always ready with good suggestions and solutions to potential problems. I love working with Fox World Travel. I have recommended others and they have had similar great experiences. I am so happy someone recommended you!

We find the simplicity of working with an agent to be the perfect fit for us. Fox has proven to us many times, that travel worries and having to deal with problems by ourselves, is more than offset by the peace of mind derived from working with the pros.

My agent is very efficient and answers me promptly, including when I am on the trip, I get a response or a number or another contact. It’s really important to me to have someone to reach out to while out of the country.

I’m so glad that Elizabeth helped plan our recent trip to Cancun. She made several suggestions and recommendations that made our trip so much more enjoyable such as staying at the quieter/calmer Secrets rather than the wilder, noisier Breathless. Also, she warned us against talking to the annoying travel agents on our way out of the airport on our way to our shuttle which could have led to additional charges and wasted time expenditures. Thanks so much Elizabeth! We thoroughly enjoyed our Cancun experience!

Their expertise on travel requirements is invaluable. They took into account all of our travel plans and developed a great itinerary.

Your staff is very well informed and always looking for ways to better my trip.

I used to use AAA for all my travel needs, but then they eliminated their in person travel agents and made it so all your travel plans had to be done over the phone. I really appreciate the in-person, face-to-face contact Fox offers. Katie Buss is fantastic.

Group Travel Support

Our group experts can help you succeed.

Group travel is an advanced market segment and our dedicated team is here to assist you with this specialized niche. Booking groups comes with many new questions and additional considerations for you as the travel agent. Planning group travel can be rewarding, but it takes a lot of time, planning, and organization.

What makes a group booking?

A group booking can vary depending on the group type. Land Groups contract group space with a minimum of 10 rooms (20 people) and cruise groups contract with a minimum of 8 cabins (16 people). A group is based on the number of accommodations needed and not a specific amount of passengers traveling.

KHM Travel Agents can:

  • Rely on the dedicated, detail-oriented support of experienced travel agents
  • Take advantage of the established relationships and commission levels with top group suppliers like Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Apple Leisure Group, and Delta Vacations
  • Promote and book into group space already held by KHM Travel Group and/or our consortia, Travel Leaders Network
  • Manage their group bookings, clients, and commissions in our client management system, myTravelCRM
  • Immerse themselves in learning groups with focused emails and webinars
  • Schedule one-on-one support sessions to educate and empower them to confidently begin booking groups.

Planning group trips can be intimidating, but with our experienced team to support you, it doesn’t have to be. We know what it takes to navigate booking group cruise space, and what it takes to wow a destination wedding party.

What many agents don’t expect is the investment of time, energy, and money that booking groups requires. With KHM Travel Group, our goal is to lay the foundation for you to provide first-rate service to your groups and build your group business.

the tour itself was amazing. The national parks do not disappoint. The travel accomodations were very cramped and uncomfortable. I am only 5 foot tall and I was cramped in this 14 passenger van. Food opportunities were limited.
Fantastic experience - efficient use of time, great itinerary. Well-informed and interesting guide who is also just a great person.

Amazing trip to see some of the best of US National Parks. Very educational and fun to learn about the history of the area and meet the locals on various tours and restaurants.
Awesome spring break trip! My husband and I had the absolute best time while visiting some of the prettiest country in our nation. The guide, Hogan was extremely professional, knowledgeable and prompt. Hogan knows history, and was able to share so much amazing information about the area and the sites we visited. We were the only two out of group that camped in the tent and Hogan stayed with us at the camp ground, just in case we needed anything, which put a whole other twist to the care that was provided. We were able to see the stars so brightly at night and wake up to a breathtaking sunrise. I can’t express enough how amazing that experience was. Every single stop offered something unique, yet equally stunning. Antelope Canyon was my favorite and Monument Valley was my husband’s favorite. The helicopter ride was out of this world. We shared the tour with total strangers, which became our new friends very quickly. Everyone on this tour was super respectful.

Just couldn’t have been better. Extremely professional guides Robin and Sarah were highly knowledgable, friendly and organised. Accomodation was excellent in every location (most hotels even had hot tubs and pools!) and the food options were always good. Lovely comfortable Mercedes minibus. Highly recommended to everyone - would do another tour with South West Adventure Tours in a heartbeat.
Guide was knowledgeable and helpful. It was a good group

My son and I had a great hiking adventure on the Sedona tour! The scenery was stunning, the hikes were fun! Tolman was an excellent guide, who was very knowledgeable about the area, he had great hiking tips, and he picked some enjoyable challenging hikes for us! He was also an excellent cook! He prepared us some great meals! His positive outlook on everything helped the group of strangers on the trek quickly bond which led us all to have a great hiking experience!
Judd was excellent, and very knowledgable, he was very prepared and i would recommend Intrepid to my friends and family

Trafalgar

Excellent. Great guide, driver, weather, hotels, food. Great itenirary. Love love this trip.
Optional excursions were reasonably priced. Suggest you put together other places in each city as a walking guide or short taxi or uber ride. Example access to close by museums open late and could walk to from hotel. Free time activities and what they are and where located is helpful.tour guide can offer to accompany a group interested to explore more during free leisure tome.Provide more detail info about the logistics of site visits. Niagara falls..suggest more water proof gear clothing and shoe types etc. Terrain to expect when visiting certain sites and possible alternatives.climbing and how difficult-easy or more strenuous or advanced climbing activity. Overall, small groups so much better than filling up bus. Thank you for giving single travelers their own bus space. Would love to watch more travel videos on longer driving distances.

Although the tour was very expensive- over $2000 for 3 days is over the top- it wss a great experience, saw lots of wildlife and the guide was outstanding
What an amazing experience this was; from the greeting and pick up by our guide/driver, to the phenomenal sights and the historical references that accompanied them! I am so pleased. This was an exceptionally planned tour that successfully met all of my needs. I would not change a thing and look forward to future adventures with them.

Good time with lots of riding in the van going to interesting places
We had a wonderful time. The tour was well planned and well managed. The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

Infinite Adventures

Infinite Adventures

  • Excellent - 118 reviews for USA tours
It was my first group trip and also my first camping trip. I have to say it was one of the best trips I've been on. It was an adventure! We were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights at Remote Camp. Tory and Dave took care of everything and made sure everyone had a great time. No matter what problem you had, they always helped each other! Dave cooked delicious food, we had marshmallows by the fire in the evening and it felt like family. It's a great tour and I can only recommend it to anyone! It certainly wasn't my last tour with Infinite Adventure! Many thanks to Tory, Dave and Natalie (who you could ask any question you wanted to know beforehand) for this unforgettable time! :)
Jump on the bus with Infinite Adventures for a magnificent Alaskan expedition! Dave and Tory are excellent guides and will keep you informed about the areas you visit and give expert advice. I found this to be a truly joyful experience!

Globus

  • Excellent - 74,884 reviews for USA tours
This was our second trip on Globus and both experiences were fantastic.
I was skeptical of a group tour, particularly by coach. The experienced guide, Jason, along with driver Shauna, changed my view completely.

My first experience with an organized tour like this. Expense alone will limit future trips. Much more walking than my wife was prepared for. This alone reduced her enjoyment. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and thorough with his planning and execution. Andrew has a fun personality and very personable. One item that disappointed me was the shuttle from airport to resort at both ends of the
Insights Tours are always amazing and this one was no exception. Nice balance of free time to relax and experience Hawaii on your own with visits to places on the islands to experience the culture. Learned a lot of Hawaii’s history throughout our visit. Overall a lovely experience and would highly recommend if you want to visit Hawaii and learn more about the islands.

This was a fast but nice tour and Dave was a good guide. Only in LA i thought we should have had more time but it was perfect for a Solo Travler
I enjoyed this trip . The coach is good.Hyannis first day break fast was good.coverage is good.Hyannis golf resort stay is superb.providence city halt in hotel graduates is excellent.Fall colours coverage is very good.coach guidance is okay.overall the trip is very good.

The Coyote Trip

The Coyote Trip

  • Good - 11 reviews for USA tours
This trip was run like a school trip, we were told that we had to stick to the schedule rigidly even though I asked several times to visit a different museum/shop. Free time was limited and it seemed like the guide had specific ideas of what he wanted to do and see. Our guide also left us on a subway in New York to get home close to midnight and then we had issues getting checked into the hostel. FYI most tour guides make sure their group gets to the hotel safely and without hassle. Waste of time and money.
From a speedboat to the Statue of Liberty to fireworks on 4th July in Washington to hiking to Yosemite Falls, this trip showcased the very best the USA has to offer. I went on the 21 day Full Cyote trip from New York to San Francisco with my brother. With such a packed itinerary of included activities, it offered great value for money. The guides in every region we visited were excellent. A particular shout out to Ryan, who added in extra stops and experiences based on the group's interests. Other highlights included the Grand Canyon, Washington's museums, whale watching in Boston, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge and sunset in Griffeths Park. I met a great group of people on the trip, and I wouldn't hesitate to book with the Cyote Trip again.

14 Best Senior-friendly Travel Groups

These senior-friendly travel companies offer tours and travel experiences as diverse as their clients.

groups travel agent

The benefits of travel, whether it's a refreshing weekend getaway or a month-long trip to a new destination, are undeniable. And for retirees and seniors who have time and a travel budget, the opportunities are nearly endless — their own city, state, country, and even the whole world are all waiting to be explored.

It should be recognized that seniors are as diverse as any other generation, perhaps even more so as their years of experience have taken them in many directions. While their interests, abilities, values, and habits may vary, it can safely be said that for many, travel is in their plans.

Seniors travel to visit family, learn about the countries of their ancestors , or explore new destinations. Many seek immersive experiences, educational opportunities, or adventure. And travel companies are responding to their needs and wishes by offering tour options ranging from independent to fully guided, budget to luxury, and group to individual. The 14 organizations listed below are either aimed specifically at mature clients or feature experiences that are flexible enough to accommodate a variety of travelers.

Walking the World

Operating out of Grand Junction, Colorado, Walking the World offers walking and hiking tours mainly for travelers over the age of 50 who want to be immersed in the destinations they choose. Experienced hikers will enjoy its Rocky Mountain National Park tour , for example, with treks of up to 10 miles on some days during the eight-day itinerary. Meanwhile, the Ireland trip covers 11 days of exploring fishing villages, rolling green hills, the stunning Cliffs of Moher, the Dingle Peninsula, and Killarney National Park. Daily walks range from four to eight miles and are described as gentle to moderate.

Road Scholar

Originally launched as Elderhostel in 1975, the company rebranded in 2010 as Road Scholar , recognizing the values and interests of lifelong learners who have participated in their lectures, tours, field trips, and educational experiences over the years. Participants are typically over the age of 50 and ready to learn from travel or focus on a specific interest. Trip themes such as grandparent adventures (special types of trips you can take with your grandchild), cruises, urban exploration, art and history, historical sites, and academic topics can be browsed by destination, activity level, and interest to help clients select their ideal tour experience.

Adventures Abroad

While Adventures Abroad largely caters to travelers over 50, tours are open to adults of all ages, and operate on every continent except for Antarctica. The company's "soft adventure" trips, which concentrate on the culture and history of a destination, don't include strenuous activities, though a reasonable degree of fitness and the ability to walk are required. Trips are rated from one to three based on physical activity, with the first level featuring only leisurely walks and level two meaning more time on your feet each day. Level-three trips might include walks or hikes on uneven ground for three to seven hours, though at a leisurely pace. Specific trips are suggested for each activity level for easy planning.

An adventure travel company designed for people ages 50 and over, ElderTreks offers small-group adventures — think wildlife safaris, hiking trips, cultural journeys, and other unique expeditions — in more than 100 countries. The tours are rated by activity level, ranging from one to five. At level one, travelers should be able to walk for one to two hours, whereas at level five, they'll need to be capable of hiking for eight to 10 hours.

Senior Cycling

Specializing in bicycle tours for active adults ages 50 and up, Senior Cycling limits groups to a maximum of 13 participants. And they are always accompanied by the "sag wagon" in case someone needs a break from riding. Trips are rated at two levels: intermediate (for the occasional rider who prefers bike paths and flat terrain for 20–40 miles per day) and advanced (for those who are at ease with up to 50 miles per day, hills, and traffic). Custom tours can also be arranged for families or groups of friends.

Firebird Tours

With a focus on clients ages 50 and over, Firebird Tours offers small group trips to destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East that deliver value, comfort, and quality. Themes for guided tours include gastronomy, history, architecture, and the Northern Lights , as well as theater and opera. Private family tours are also available, with destinations and activities suitable for a wider age range depending on the group.

Seniors interested in active vacations should check out Backroads , based out of Berkeley, California. While tours are open to all ages, the majority of participants tend to be over 50. Guided biking, walking, and hiking tours to a variety of destinations are geared toward adults, but also include options for families traveling with "teens and kids," "older teens and 20s," and those in their "20s and beyond." The company's Dolce Tempo tours offer a more relaxed pace, and include trips such as the Easygoing E-bike Tour in California wine country and the Easygoing Multi-adventure Tour in New Zealand.

Overseas Adventure Travel

With a variety of trips available to destinations on every continent, Overseas Adventure Travel makes a great choice if you're interested in seeing the world via small-ship cruises. In addition to guided land tours for groups of eight to 16, OAT offers sailings through the Norwegian Fjords, along West Africa's coast, and throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Seas. Mature travelers are often attracted to the flexibility of the trips and the ability to personalize activities. Recognizing that many of their customers travel alone — including a whopping 85 percent of their female clients — the company has created its getaways with solo travelers in mind, whether they're first-timers or experienced adventurers.

EF Go Ahead Tours

Operating out of Cambridge, Massachusetts, EF Go Ahead Tours offers a selection of small group tours for 10 to 22 guests. The senior-friendly trips focus on interests such as food and wine, adventure, and safaris, as well as specific destinations and seasonal events (think Oktoberfest in Germany, annual holiday markets in Europe, or St. Patrick's Day in Ireland). Traveling alone? The company's solo tours provide private rooms and personalized experiences especially geared toward those traveling by themselves. Clients can also gather their own group and take advantage of the services of EF's professional coordinators.

Kensington Tours

If you're looking to create a fully customized, privately guided trip based on your group's specific needs and travel preferences, look no further than Kensington Tours . Their expertise in more than 100 destinations worldwide makes planning easy, whether the goal is a culturally immersive experience, enjoying fine wine and dining, discovering the history of a place, or relaxation. While these arrangements are ideal for mature travelers who appreciate ease and luxury, the company also provides experiences for multigenerational travel in countries like Thailand, Japan, Iceland, and South Africa, featuring kid-friendly trips that come with private vehicles, local guides, and dining options fit for the whole family.

Intrepid Travel

A leading adventure tour operator known for its efforts to make travel accessible to all, Intrepid Travel offers a good mix of bespoke and ready-made itinerary options that can be adapted to suit your group's comfort level. Intrepid's Accessible Tours are especially inclusive, with trips that are designed for every type of traveler. Whichever trip you decide to book, you'll have access to local destination specialists to help you choose the perfect places to stay as well as organize transportation, activities, and guided tours, depending on your needs. The company's Walking & Trekking trips, suitable for a range of fitness levels, are especially popular with seniors, though adults of all ages are free to join in.

YMT Vacations

In business since 1967, YMT Vacations designs all-inclusive trips with mature travelers in mind. Prices cover hotel accommodations, guided sightseeing tours, baggage handling, and the expertise of tour directors and driver guides. Destinations include Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, North America, Central and South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, among others, and the company arranges travel for popular events such as the Rose Parade in California. A number of river cruise and transatlantic sailing options are also available.

Grand European Travel

Grand European Travel is an AARP-preferred travel provider (check the website for members-only discounts) that promotes itself as a one-stop shop to help clients plan their desired travel experiences. Why Use a Travel Agent?

Spotlight Newsroom

We sat down with AAA Hudson Valley Travel Agents and asked them all about why working with a Travel Agent is valuable.

Here’s what they said:

Our job is to plan and arrange tour packages for leisure and business travel worldwide. We spend time reserving, booking and ticketing air travel, in addition to providing hotel and car rental services at the best available cost. A big part of our job is keeping up-to-date with travel industry trends, changes and news, as well as listening to our clients’ preferences and requirements. Our main goal is to help with as many aspects of their trips as possible. We love seeing the excitement on their faces, hearing about the trips they’ve taken, and working with them on future adventures.

Why does working one-on-one with a Travel Agent make a difference when booking a trip?

It makes a world of difference. We advocate for our clients, and they always have someone in their corner to handle the planning or unexpected changes. This takes away the overwhelming stress that you feel after spending hours at your computer. We are experienced in airline schedule changes, country entry requirements, etc. What happens if you have a schedule change to your flights and they bump your seat assignments- did you even notice?  It’s the little things, as well as those big things, that you may or may not be versed to handle. We listen to what our clients want, and make it a personal goal to help them achieve their travel dream. With the ability to book everything online now, it makes the experience feel so impersonal. It feels good for our clients to have someone to reach out to any time there is a question.

What types of exclusive benefits are available to AAA Members who book with the agency?

When booking with AAA preferred suppliers, clients can receive discounts and perks, like reduced costs on packages and discounted vouchers for excursions, plus additional onboard credit when a cruise is booked. We have an extensive portfolio for land packages, escorted tours and Flexible Independent Travel (FIT) suppliers.

Now the fun stuff! In your opinions, what are some of the most underrated vacation destinations?

In the states, Savannah, Georgia, is usually overlooked in favor of other southern cities like Charleston and Nashville. Savannah is equally charming. Further south into Central America, Costa Rica has so much to offer any type of traveler and it’s a short flight (or two) away from the Albany area. Costa Rica offers the beautiful beaches and all-inclusive resorts on Guanacaste. It’s just an all-around adventurous destination! Then, of course, across the Atlantic is Alberobello, Italy. Alberobello on the southeastern part of Italy is a fairytale town known for its Trulli (round whitewashed houses). It’s also a UNESCO heritage site!

Concur Founder Steve Singh and Firms Acquire Direct Travel

Justin Dawes , Skift

April 2nd, 2024 at 8:00 AM EDT

Steve Singh believes corporate travel is ready for new technology, and he believes the right company can displace the old ones.

Justin Dawes

Steve Singh, co-founder of Concur, and a group of firms have fully acquired the corporate travel agency Direct Travel . And they’re planning to release a new platform for customers later this year that combines several new technologies from Direct Travel and three other startups that Singh has a stake in.

The group — which includes firms Durable Capital Partners, Madrona Ventures, Top Tier Capital Partners, and Blackstone Credit & Insurance — have purchased the company from the private venture capital firm Antares Capital and other debt providers, Singh said.

Price and terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Singh, managing partner of Madrona Ventures, is now executive chairman of Direct Travel.

Christal Bemont , who spent nearly 16 years at SAP Concur, most recently as chief revenue officer, is now the CEO of Direct Travel. As part of the deal, Ed Adams is retiring from his role as CEO of Direct Travel.

This is the second big corporate travel agency acquisition announcement recently. Amex GBT last week said it plans to acquire CWT for $570 million .

Direct Travel was founded in 2011 and is based in Denver, with 80 offices in North America and the UK. It has a total of about 1,800 employees.

Travel Weekly ranks the company among the largest corporate travel agents in the world.

It has more than 4,500 clients, mostly in the middle market, though they also include large companies such as PayPal.

Direct Travel generates over $300 million in revenue annually, and it’s growing by about 10% each year, Singh said.

“We think we can actually improve that growth rate to 15% to 20% over the course of the next year, and we think we can maintain that 15% to 20% growth rate for years to come,” Singh said in an interview with Skift.

Singh sold Concur to SAP in 2014 for $8.3 billion .

What’s Next for Direct Travel

Singh and the other investors have been looking for acquisition opportunities in the corporate travel space for about a year, he said.

He and the same group of firms have invested together in startups Spotnana, Troop, and Center. Singh is executive chairman of all four companies, and Madrona Ventures is the largest investor.

The plan is to release a platform for Direct Travel customers that integrates the technologies and services of all four of these companies. Each company will continue operating independently, as well.

Spotnana has raised over $100 million to rebuild the infrastructure of corporate travel agency bookings, away from the traditional global distribution systems and the incentives they provide to agents for booking certain products. In travel industry lingo, that’s what’s known as new distribution capabilities .

Troop, which has raised around $20 million , is a platform meant to help companies plan, book, expense, and manage logistics for in-person meetings.

Center, an expense management platform that provides corporate cards to clients’ employees, has raised a total of $140 million .

The plan is that the single platform will also include AI integrations, including a trip planner that accepts prompts in natural language, and a way to automatically deliver options in response to travel disruptions.

“What the corporate travel space is really due for is a transformation. The reality is this industry operates on legacy technology stacks, siloed information, disjointed experiences,” Singh said.

“We think that there’s an opportunity for a next-generation [travel management company] to emerge as the leader in this space. We think there’s an opportunity to, frankly, displace many of the technology providers that exist in this space who are all building on top of legacy systems.”

The Vision Behind the Plans

Connecting all four of these travel companies is part of Singh’s long-term vision of “the perfect trip,” or as others in the industry call it, “the connected trip.”

It’s the idea that all travel companies involved in a trip should have easy access to that traveler’s data, with permission, which would theoretically enable a more seamless experience for the traveler. In today’s world, a traveler who books a flight through an agency would usually need to return to the agency to change that flight because the airline doesn’t automatically receive the customer’s booking data. In the world of the “perfect” or “connected” trip, the traveler could change the flight directly with the airline.

Singh also emphasized that the coming platform will be built with an open technological infrastructure, meaning that clients can choose to connect third-party software and build their own suite of products. It’s more common with next-generation hotel management tech, but not corporate travel.

“To me, this is what’s been the problem in the travel industry for the last decade: People have been protecting their existing models and not innovating on behalf of the customer, not innovating on behalf of the supplier. And whenever you do that, it opens up opportunities for those that are willing.”

Who is Don Hankey, the billionaire whose insurance firm provided Trump a $175 million bond payment?

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: April 3, 2024 / 11:04 AM EDT / CBS News

Former President Donald Trump and his co-defendants in his New York civil fraud case on Monday posted a bond of $175 million , following a judge's ruling that they had for years misrepresented the value of his properties. The bond is underwritten by an insurance company run by a billionaire, who got his start making high-risk, high-interest loans to car buyers with poor credit.

Don Hankey, the executive whose company provided the bond, is a little-known mogul who built his $7.4 billion fortune through car dealerships and providing subprime auto loans, according to Forbes magazine . That makes him richer than Trump, whom Forbes estimates is worth $6.4 billion, including his multibillion stake in the newly public Trump Media & Technology Group.

Hankey, who told The Associated Press he has never met nor spoken with Trump, said his Knight Speciality Insurance company provided both cash and bonds as collateral for Trump's appellate bond. That bond is now essentially a placeholder that will guarantee payment if the judgment against Trump is upheld on appeal.

"This is what we do at Knight Insurance, and we're happy to do this for anyone who needs a bond," Hankey told the wire service.

Hankey didn't immediately respond to CBS MoneyWatch's request for comment.

Who is Don Hankey?

Hankey, 80, got started in the auto industry when his father bought a stake in a Ford dealership in Los Angeles in 1958. A teenager at the time, Hankey started out washing cars during the summer, but later stepped into a salesman role, he told the Los Angeles Business Journal last year.

While Hankey was studying finance at the University of Southern California, his father died and his family lost its stake in the car dealership. But a few years after Hankey's graduation, his family repurchased the dealership with a $250,000 loan.

How did Hankey get into the car loans business?

After buying the dealership, Hankey courted buyers that other car sellers often rejected: subprime borrowers. His dealership provided the loans, unlike other car dealers which typically turn to banks to provide financing for auto purchases.

Hankey told the Los Angeles Business Journal that his showroom was often filled with people arguing over terms they believed were unfavorable.

"We had beefs going on, and at the same time people coming in, buying cars," Hankey said . "But it all worked. And you would think that somebody buying a car would hate to see somebody else arguing about a payment, but it didn't seem to matter."

What other businesses does Hankey own?

Hankey expanded beyond auto dealerships when he realized that there was demand for subprime auto loans outside of Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles Business Journal.

He incorporated Westlake Financial Services, which Forbes said now works with more than 30,000 car dealerships across the U.S. to provide auto loans to people with poor credit histories. Westlake is now part of the Hankey Group, which also oversees other financial services companies, including Knight Insurance Group, the enterprise that provided Trump's bond.

Is Hankey a Trump supporter?

Hankey told Bloomberg News he voted for Trump, but said that his support for the real estate developer didn't play into his decision to extend the bond.

"Yes, I voted for him in the past, but this is a business deal and this is what we do," Hankey told the publication. "I have never met Donald Trump, nor talked to him on the phone."

Hankey has been a generous donor to political candidates, almost exclusively Republicans, including Donald Trump. Leading up to the 2016 presidential election, Hankey and his wife gave $80,000 to the Trump Victory Fund, with $5,400 going to the Trump campaign and the rest to the Republican National Committee, according to Open Secrets.

Axos Bank, in which Hankey is one of the biggest non-institutional investors, provided the funding to refinance Trump Tower and take out a $100 million loan in 2022, when the Trump Organization's real estate valuations were under scrutiny due to the New York fraud case , Bloomberg reported. Hankey told the publication he wasn't aware of the deal until after it was completed.

How does the $175 million bond work?

Appeal bonds are used when a defendant appeals a court ruling, which essentially freezes enforcement of the financial judgment as the legal process continues.

Insurers typically provide the bond after they have proof of collateral and charge a fee, which ranges from 1% to 2% of the bond amount, according to insurance broker NFP. That means Trump could be paying as much as $3.5 million on an annual basis for the bond guarantee from Knight Insurance.

If Trump wins his appeal of the ruling, he won't have to pay the state anything and will get his money back.

"As promised, President Trump has posted bond. He looks forward to vindicating his rights on appeal and overturning this unjust verdict," said one of Trump's lawyers, Alina Habba.

Middle East latest: Iran says its need to 'punish' Israel 'may have been obviated' had UN condemned embassy strike

Iran's mission to the United Nations says the Security Council should have condemned the strike on its embassy in Syria last week. Scroll through live updates while you listen to our latest podcast on how tensions are escalating in the region.

The leader of Hamas Ismail Haniyeh has said the militant group is still seeking a deal with Israel, despite three of his sons being killed in a strike earlier today.

Speaking to Reuters, he denied his children were fighters for Hamas and said "the interests of the Palestinian people are placed ahead of everything" when asked if their killing would impact peace talks.

"We are seeking to reach a deal, but the occupation is still procrastinating and evading a response to the demands," he said.

Haniyeh left Gaza in 2019 and lives in exile in Qatar.

The top Hamas leader in Gaza is Yehya Sinwar, who masterminded the 7 October attack on Israel.

The Israeli military has claimed it has struck three military compounds used by Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

In a post on Telegram, the Israel Defence Forces said it hit buildings in Meiss el Jabal, Yarine and Khiam a short while ago.

Another Hezbollah observation post was struck in Marwahin, it  said.

"Throughout the day, IDF artillery fired in order to remove a threat in the area of Abou Chach," it added.

Hezbollah - an Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon - has regularly exchanged fire with Israel since the war in Gaza broke out.

A Moroccan asylum seeker murdered a "defenceless" pensioner in a rampage motivated by the conflict in Gaza, a court has heard.

Ahmed Ali Alid, 45, attempted to kill his housemate, Javed Nouri, a former Muslim who converted to Christianity, because he believed Nouri was an apostate - meaning someone who has abandoned their religion, Teesside Crown Court was told.

He then went out on to the streets of Hartlepool where he encountered Terence Carney, 70, who was out for a morning walk, attacking him and stabbing him to death, the jury heard.

Following his arrest, Alid admitted being responsible for the attempted murder of Nouri and the murder of Carney.

However, he is now on trial after pleading not guilty to both charges and to assaulting two female police officers who had interviewed him after his arrest.

Alid told police the attacks on the two men on 15 October last year, a week after the Hamas attacks on Israel, were "because of the conflict in Gaza" and to remove "Zionists" from Palestine, the court heard.

He said he would have killed others if he had not been stopped and was prepared to be a martyr, the jury was told.

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews have gathered in Jerusalem today, protesting against mandatory enlistment in Israel's military.

The protests came after Israel's Supreme Court ruled that government subsidies for ultra-Orthodox men of enlistment age would expire.

Most Jewish men are required to serve nearly three years in the military, followed by years of reserve duty.

Jewish women serve two mandatory years.

But the politically powerful ultra-Orthodox, who make up roughly 13% of Israeli society, have traditionally received exemptions while studying full-time in religious seminaries.

There are more than 60,000 ultra-Orthodox men of enlistment age who are studying rather than serving in the military.

US President Joe Biden has said his country's support for Israel is "ironclad" after reports an Iranian attack is imminent.

Iran had promised to retaliate after Israel was widely blamed for killing a top Iranian commander in Damascus, Syria, last week.

It has led to fears the Israel-Gaza war could escalate to a wider Middle East conflict.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did nothing to allay concerns when he said his forces were preparing for scenarios in other areas.

On the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson speaks to our Middle East correspondent Ali Bunkall about how ready Israel is for any attacks by Iran and what its next moves might be.

Plus, retired air vice-marshal Sean Bell, who is a military analyst, details Iran's military capabilities and what form an attack by Tehran might take.

Israel has claimed to have killed one of Hamas's financiers in Gaza.

The Israel Defence Forces said Nasser Yakob Jabber Nasser was "responsible for funding a significant part of Hamas's military activities" in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

"Last December, he transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars to Hamas for its military activities," it said in a Telegram post .

Hamas has not publicly commented on the claim.

It comes after the Hamas-affiliated news agency Shehab said three of the militant group's sons were killed in a strike earlier today.

Sky News contacted the IDF over the claim, but it could not confirm the reports.

The UN Security Council should have condemned the strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria, Iran's mission to the United Nations has said.

If the council had done so, the "imperative for Iran" to retaliate to the attack could have been avoided, it added.

The embassy in Damascus was struck last week in an attack that killed two Iranian generals and six other Iranian military officers.

Israel has been widely blamed for the strike, with Iran vowing to take revenge on the country.

Israel has not publicly commented on the attack.

"Had the UN Security Council condemned the Zionist regime's reprehensible act of aggression on our diplomatic premises in Damascus and subsequently brought to justice its perpetrators, the imperative for Iran to punish this rogue regime might have been obviated," Tehran's mission to the UN said on X.

Iran uses the term "Zionist regime" to refer to Israel.

The families of three British aid workers who were killed in an Israeli drone strike in Gaza have paid tribute following the repatriation of their bodies to the UK.

James Kirby, James "Jim" Henderson and John Chapman were among the seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) workers who died in the attack last Monday.

The strike, which the Israel Defence Forces said was a "serious mistake", prompted condemnation from London and other Western capitals.

Mr Kirby's family said he will be "missed by so many", adding they were "overwhelmed by the support shown".

"As a family we are shocked and saddened by the sudden death of our beautiful James, who we lost on 2 April," they said.

Mr Henderson's family described him as a "kind, compassionate, loyal and considerate man, our shining light".

"We as a family are deeply shocked, saddened and upset at the untimely tragic death of Jim," they said.

The family of Mr Chapman said: "John was an incredible husband, father, brother, son and friend who will be missed deeply and he was an inspiration to many.

"We are devastated by this unbearable loss but are hugely relieved to have John home."

With reports of an imminent attack on Israel by Iran, our international affairs editor Dominic Waghorn says this is a "very dangerous moment for the Middle East".

He says just as we thought the risk of a regional war were subsiding "it has now come back".

Waghorn says the "Iranians throughout this war have avoided escalating wherever they can" and "don't want a war" but "they feel they have to retaliate".

"The assumption is it will be a calibrated well-planned retaliation. It won't go too far but it will go far enough to try and restore their deterrence but it won't go too far as to plunge the region into all out conflict," he explains.

He notes whatever decision Iran takes "it's war and things don't necessarily go to plan".

"This is a very dangerous moment for the Middle East," he adds.

British and other foreign diplomats in Israel have been advised to stock up on essential items in anticipation of an Iranian attack.

The guidance, which has been issued to families in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, also recommends carrying radios when out and about, in case phone networks are disrupted.

Israel is currently on alert for an Iranian retaliation following a suspected Israeli airstrike on Iran's embassy in Syria earlier this month.

German airline Lufthansa has also suspended flights to the Iranian capital, Tehran.

South Texas groups trying to stop state’s land swap with SpaceX

SpaceX rockets at the launch pad at the Brownsville facility on Oct. 20, 2021. Texas Parks and...

( TEXAS TRIBUNE ) - A coalition of Rio Grande Valley organizations have filed a lawsuit against the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, seeking to block the state agency from pursuing a land swap with Elon Musk’s SpaceX spacecraft company.

Last month, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission  voted unanimously  to pursue an exchange that would give 43 acres of Boca Chica State Park to SpaceX in exchange for 477 acres adjacent to Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. Rio Grande Valley residents opposed the exchange, arguing that Boca Chica is sacred to the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas and that the public park has long been a favorite recreational outpost for the majority Hispanic community in the Rio Grande Valley.

In the lawsuit filed last week in the district court of Travis County, environmental groups argue that the exchange is unlawful because the state failed to consider alternatives to giving away public land and failed to ensure the minimization of harm to public land. The groups also argue that the state did not consider the best interests of the local community. The suit states that SpaceX does not own the land the state would receive in the swap. The Texas Standard  reported  in January that Musk was still negotiating the purchase of the private land.

“This is just the latest example of our state officials failing to fulfill their obligations to Texans, whenever SpaceX is involved,” Marisa Perales, an attorney representing the three Rio Grande Valley organizations who filed the lawsuit, said in a statement. “Protecting public park land and the public’s interest means saying ‘no’ to the demands of SpaceX, whose space flight activities have caused harm to public lands and wildlife habitats.”

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department acquired Boca Chica State Park, located at Texas’ southernmost point along the Gulf Coast, in 1994 through a federal program aimed to preserve the land. The area provides habitat for some endangered species.

SpaceX began purchasing land in the area in 2012 to build a rocket manufacturing and test launch facility. The lawsuit alleges that SpaceX’s operations have caused damage to public lands by increasing runoff of stormwater and creating pollution.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department declined to comment on the lawsuit but said the agency has, for many years, been interested in the 477 acres they will acquire through the land swap.

“The 477 acres offered to TPWD near Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge encompass one of the most biologically diverse regions in North America, sheltering endangered species, winter fowl and other migratory birds,” said Cory Chandler, an agency spokesperson. “The land has been of interest to us and the conservation community for many years and an exchange would create a tenfold return while allowing TPWD to work with partners in the region to plan for a new state park for public enjoyment with access for fishing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, hiking, biking and family gatherings in a rapidly developing region of Texas.”

Disclosure: Texas Parks And Wildlife Department has been a financial supporter of The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization that is funded in part by donations from members, foundations and corporate sponsors. Financial supporters play no role in the Tribune’s journalism. Find a complete  list of them here .
